Arthritis Treatments

People don't necessarily think of a chiropractor when they think about arthritis. That, however, is a mistake. A chiropractor focuses on the relationship between bodily structure and function and there is no doubt that arthritis affects the function of joints. Dr. Carlo Leon at Central DuPage Chiropractic & Rehabilitation in Wheaton, IL, offers a variety of treatments and therapies that can help with improving the condition of arthritic joints.

Chiropractic adjustment

Arthritis means inflammation in the joints. It can develop in any of the joints and the spine is no exception. Gentle joint adjustments can help improve the condition, especially in people with osteoarthritis, which is when the cartilage that cushions joints is wearing away. If the joints have an active rheumatic flare-up, manipulation may not be the right option. But while touching the joint with inflammation may not be the right choice in every circumstance, treating the surrounding tissues can help to reduce the pain and inflammation. The knees, shoulders, and more can also be adjusted.

Therapeutic massage

Therapeutic massage helps to prepare the joint for adjustment. When the muscles are relaxed, the joints are easier to adjust and more likely to remain in place. Massage also just makes you feel good.

Spinal decompression

Arthritis in the spine can often result in bone spurs and pain. With spinal decompression, the spine is stretched to increase the space between the vertebrae. It is often used for helping with bulging or herniated discs, but since it increases the space, it can also relieve nerve pressure resulting from osteoarthritis.

Cold laser therapy

Cold laser therapy uses low spectrum light to reduce the inflammation and pain that can result from arthritis. It can be used on any joint where there is inflammation to stimulate the release of more stored cellular energy. The levels of light are different from those used in lasers that cut through things. It has been shown to be very effective.
